History of Alpha Kappa Psi

Over 100 years as a fraternal organization, Alpha Kappa Psi embodies a rich history. The Brooklyn bridge plays a pivotal role in the beginning of the story. It was on walks across this famous New York City landmark that our founders first drafted the idea that would form into a professional business fraternity.

The initial group, called the "Brooklyn Four" - comprised of George Bergen, Howard Jefferson, Nathan Lane, Jr. and Frederic Leach - were focused on the spirit of brotherhood that ties people of vision together. With minds and hearts running the same course, the first organizational meeting was held on October 5, 1904.

The following spring on March 20, 1905 the fraternity was officially chartered in the state of New York, with the ten members pictured below comprising the inaugural class. In the century that has passed, the fraternity has grown to a membership exceeding 240,000 in over 300 chartered chapters within the United States and the United Kingdom.

We stand proudly knowing that we are the largest professional fraternity. In addition, Alpha Kappa Psi is now among the 10 largest fraternities in both the social and professional fraternal organizations.
